Rhino and Rylan

Arrival and Initial Treatments:

Rhino and Rylan were 2 elderly 2-year-old bucks surrendered to us on the 8th of December 2019.
Upon arrival, it was clear Rhino had an irritated respiratory system. He was displaying audible respiratory noise (even without auscultation) and piloerection. Rylan also had hyperplastic dermatitis which was likely the result of a parasitic infection.

Rhino and Rylan were both treated with topical Ivermectin and introduced to prophylactics recommended when dealing with respiratory disease - it's something we do for all rats, regardless if they're presenting with signs of disease.
Rylan responded brilliantly to treatment and all symptoms subsided. On the other hand, although Rhino improved with good husbandry, he still had symptoms that suggested he had an upper-respiratory infection. He was introduced to nebulized F10 and oral Baytril and Metacam for 30-days.
Despite Rhino's excellent response to the medication, 42hrs after discontinuing antibiotics his symptoms returned. This time, the vet prescribed oral Ronaxan as well as Baytril and Metacam for another 30-days. Rhino responded well.
Both boys were bonded to a larger mischief.

Rhino's Brain Tumour:

Sadly, Rhino developed symptoms commonly attributable to neurological disease.
Pituitary tumours are a fairly common occurrence in Norway rats. Rhino developed polydipsia and polyuria, weight loss, loss of motor-function in forelimbs, weakness, lethargy, head-pressing behaviour, poor balance, and changes in his personality.
We introduced Rhino to Cabergoline and Prednisolone. We noticed substantial improvements in Rhino's physical symptoms, but his personality changes remained. He'd gone from being a very outgoing and lovable rat to a highly scared and defensive rat. Despite the physical improvements, given how petrified Rhino had become, we determined that his quality of life was still extremely poor.

Rhino was humanely euthanised on the 6th of March 2020.

Rylan's Brain Tumour:

It seemed more than a coincidence that Rylan also developed a suspected pituitary tumour with similar symptoms to Rhino (or it may just be that PT's are common as we've mentioned - who knows!). Rylan developed a change in his personality, weight loss, and changes to his coat.
Unfortunately, Rylan only managed to get another week of life from the medication. Like Rhino, he'd become so terrified and seemed to be traumatised whenever anyone was around. It was heartbreaking to see this sweet rat now living in constant fear. We decided Rylan's quality of life was very poor and that humane euthanasia was the kindest option for him.

Rylan passed away on the 6th of July 2020.
