Herbert and Valorie

Image
Today's post is introducing Herbert and Valorie. Although they came from separate circumstances, we got them both on the same day. You can follow us on social media: Facebook , Instagram , and Twitter You can donate to us via our Paypal , Amazon Wishlist , and Hay Experts Wishlist For more information about us, visit our website For any other enquiries, please email: bacchusresidents@outlook.com Herbert: Herbert had been abandoned at a local pet shop. We assume his owners no longer wanted him due to Roborovski's being hard to handle. Herbert originally had a typical robo-attitude - quick but harmless. We estimated him to be around 4-6 months old due to his tiny size (19g). Passing: Unfortunately, Herbert unexpectedly passed away only 3 months after arriving. The nature of his death remained unclear as there were no outward symptoms. We would suspect he had an internal illness that he was genetically predisposed to given his premature death. Herbert pas...

Lukrecia

Image
As our previous post could be considered quite heavy, we've decided to base today's post on something more lighthearted. Meet Lukrecia!  Lukrecia was being given away as a male Roborovski dwarf hamster. We snapped 'him' up as we knew a dear friend had been enquiring about robos for a very long time.  Our dear friend is a talented veterinarian who's trained to work with some exotic animals, small animals, and farm animals for a long time. They fell head over heels with one of our previous resident robos/one of her favourite patients - Hedwig. After witnessing how well she cared for Hedwig, we knew she would make the perfect robo-owner. Lukrecia turned out to be a female Roborovski who'd been incorrectly sexed. Her exact age is unknown, but she was under 6 months old when she arrived. She was a typical robo; quick to handle, but full of character. Our beloved friend has since adopted Lukrecia. We cannot tell you how loved and cared for she is. Thr...

Hedwig Had Two Benign Masses Removed

Image
Hello again, readers, THIS POST WILL CONTAIN SOME GRAPHIC POST-SURGICAL CONTENT WHICH MAY BE DISTRESSING TO SOME READERS. Today, we wanted to discuss one of the most risky surgeries we've probably ever had carried out on any of our residents - Hedwig having two masses removed. There are a multitude of reasons as to why the surgery was unbelievably risky; Hedwig is a senior Roborovski Dwarf Hamster, weighing in at only 25g, with a history of seizures.  One of the first questions people understandably ask is;  "why risk it?" .  Sometimes, cons do outweigh the pros, and in those cases, it's probably not sensible to risk it - especially when there is no prizes at the end.  In this case, we had two options: Option 1) High Risk Surgery Pros: Hedwig could go on to live another 2 years Pros: No masses Pros: Improves quality of life Cons: Potential death Cons: Major surgery Cons: Long recovery Cons: Potential secondary bacterial infection Option 2) Euthan...

More Updates

Image
Hello again, readers, We are going to do another post about a whole bunch of mini updates. Hopefully, this type of post makes it a lot easier to understand some of the 'less significant', though still relevant, updates about whatever it is that may have happened involving our residents. We know sometimes it can be quite difficult to get all of the information and points across on our Instagram - that is one of the main reasons why we started our blog. So, with that being said, we will write a fully in-depth (and hopefully easier to understand) post about some of our recent events, each event is clearly labeled, so feel free to pick and choose which sections you would prefer to read: Dave's Molar Spurs; As you've probably guessed from the subheading, Dave began suffering with molar spurs.  One morning, we noticed Dave was pawing at his mouth, and just seemed to be a bit more agitated than normal. So, we thought it would've been sensible to take him to the...

A Bunch of Updates

Image
Hello again readers, As you've probably already guessed from the title, we have a lot of things to tell you all about. Most, if not all, of these things have already been featured on our Instagram .  Normally on our  Instagram  however, we post frequent mini updates as and when we have new information about whatever it is that may be happening at the time, which can be really confusing. Heck, we find it hard to keep up with everything that is going on sometimes! Today on our blog, however, we will post about one entire event, from beginning to end - making it a lot easier to understand (hopefully).  Some updates have happy endings, and some don't, but we still think they all should be posted. Cookie's Penis Prolapse: Yes, you read that right! We thought we would start with a more light-hearted update.  We always loved to handle Cookie at dinnertime, he was always such a friendly Chinese Hamster - he would always come out to play as soon as he kne...

Hedgehog's Heart Issues

Image
Hello again readers, We have briefly discussed Hedgehog's heart on Instagram , however I thought it justified an in-depth blog post. Hedgehog is my first ever roborovski dwarf hamster - so he's that little extra special. Hedgehog like many robos is a little difficult to handle, to say the least. He does however love running around in the playpen.  Throughout his life he has had around 5 respiratory infections that went away with antibiotics. One day Hedgehog sounded quite squeaky when he was breathing, so again we trialed him on a course of antibiotics. He had become slower over the past 4 weeks, but we put it down to getting older. The antibiotics didn't shift any of the squeaking when he breathed, so he went to the vets and he was trialed on another course of antibiotics along with some metacam. We believed it to be a very nasty respiratory infection at this point. Hedgehog once again did not respond to these strong medications. The next step would have been an X...
