Mad-Eye's Enucleation Surgery

Hello Again,

We've decided to talk about Mad-Eye's eye removal today. We noticed it caught a lot of people's attention on our Instagram.
We will start at the very beginning;
One afternoon we discovered Mad-Eye's red eye was severely bulging, it looked awful. We aren't entirely sure what happened, but if we were to have a guess, we think Mad-Eye must have been climbing on top of one of his large houses. He must have slipped and banged his head, or something along those lines. One thing we know for sure, Mad-Eye was clearly in a lot of pain.

We gave Mad-Eye some painkillers, and booked him in to see the vet. When we got there, the vet saw straight away what the problem was. Mad-Eye had severe glaucoma and hemorrhaging caused by a trauma of some sort, and it was very painful. He also had no vision in the affected eye.
We could have kept Mad-Eye on painkillers for the rest of his life, but it didn't really seem like the best option. The vet recommended an enucleation surgery. It was risky, but it did seem like the better option. After all, if it went well, Mad-Eye would be comfortable for the remainder of his days.
We agreed it was the right decision, and we booked Mad-Eye in for surgery.

On the day of surgery, we were anxious wrecks. We didn't know very many animals who had been through this massive surgery, let alone any hamsters.
Thankfully, Mad-Eye's eye was successfully removed, and he came out of his anesthetic. When he came home, we made sure he had a clean cage, a bowl of peas (his favourite), and some food waiting, as he hadn't eaten that day.
He was also on antibiotics and painkillers till his next follow up appointment at the vets.
Mad-Eye's recovery process couldn't have gone any better. He had a few appointments at the vets just to check everything was healing how it should be. Mad-Eye had his stitches out a few days ago (granted he was a little bit wriggly), but he seemed more or less unfazed by the whole situation. Mad-Eye also doesn't need any pain relief anymore, to see him pain free again has been so lovely.

We're beyond pleased to see Mad-Eye make a full recovery. He's been a real warrior. He has adapted brilliantly and is back to his normal cheeky self.

You can keep up with Mad-Eye on our Instagram.
