Xalvador and Benedict

Benedict and Xalvador arrived in our care on the 21st of November 2019. They're two stunning-year-old bucks with outgoing personalities - particularly Benedict.
Both boys went on to be bonded to the other bucks as we believed they'd benefit from being in a larger group.

Benedict's Castration:

Once we'd monitored Benedict's behaviour for some weeks, we noticed his behaviour had a significant hormonal influence which was causing stress with the other rats. Benedict wasn't drawing blood from other rats, but he was creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. We decided it'd be beneficial to have him castrated.
Before his surgical appointment, Benedict had developed 3 suspected tumours - suspected to be mammary fibroadenomas on both the thoracic and inguinal chains. We'd aimed to have them removed under the same anaesthesia.
Benedict's castration went well, but we didn't have any tumours removed as he'd actually developed 5! The procedure would've been very long if we removed them, and would've put a lot of pressure on his organs. The vet decided to remove them once he'd recovered from his castration.
Benedict was introduced to 1.5mg:1kg Metacam/Meloxicam QD immediately after his procedure, and we were to gradually lower the dose throughout his recovery.

Fortunately, during his post-surgical recovery, 2 of the 5 'tumours' actually turned out to be harmless cysts that were resolving without any intervention. Given that the cysts were harmless and resolve on their own, Benedict didn't require a second surgical procedure.
Benedict has been much happier since being neutered, and the other rats are happier too. Given that Benedict is now in good health, he and Xalvador are available for adoption along with Bancroft and Gilbert!
